Complementarity problems in GAMS and the PATH solver

چکیده
A fundamental mathematical problem is to "nd a solution to a square system of nonlinear equations. There are many methods to approach this problem, the most famous of which is Newton's method. In this paper, we describe a generalization of this problem, the complementarity problem. We show how such problems are modeled within the GAMS modeling language and provide details about the PATH solver, a generalization of Newton's method, for "nding a solution. While the modeling format is applicable in many disciplines, we draw the examples in this paper from an economic background. Finally, some extensions of the modeling format and the solver are described. ( 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. JEL classixcation: C63

متن کاملMCPLIB: A Collection of Nonlinear Mixed Complementarity Problems
The origins and some motivational details of a collection of nonlinear mixed complementarity problems are given. This collection serves two purposes. Firstly, it gives a uniform basis for testing currently available and new algorithms for mixed complementarity problems. Function and Jacobian evaluations for the resulting problems are provided via a GAMS interface, making thorough testing of alg...
متن کاملComplementarity Problems in Engineering Mechanics: Models and Solution
A large class of problems in engineering mechanics involves a so-called “complementarity” relationship representing the orthogonality of two sign-constrained vectors. Typical instances are plasticity laws and contact-like conditions. For state problems, the formulation leads to a mixed complementarity problem (MCP) whereas in synthesis (e.g. minimum weight design) or identification problems, a ...
متن کاملCase Studies in Complementarity: Improving Model Formulation
Over the past several years, many practitioners have been formulating nonlinear variational inequalities as mixed complementarity problems within modeling languages such as GAMS and AMPL. Sometimes the models generated are poorly specified, either because the function is undefined near the solution or the problem is ill-conditioned or singular. In this paper, we look at information provided by ...

GAMS (General Algebraic Modelling System) is a computer language which was originally developed to assist economists at the World Bank in the quantitative analysis of economic policy questions (Meeraus (1983), Brooke, Kendrick and Meeraus (1987)). At the time of its conception and initial development, linear programming (LP) was the standard framework in which market equilibrium models were con...
